10 places to go ice skating in Massachusetts this winter, 2024-2025
Winter weather can put an end to many fun-in-sun activities, but it also opens doors to recreational opportunities such as ice skating.
Many rinks around Massachusetts offer indoor and outdoor skating for those looking to lace up and take some laps this winter and holiday season.

Boston Common Frog Pond
This outdoor rink situated on Boston Common opened on Nov. 30 and will run until March 10, 2025.
The rink is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday. The rink is closed on Christmas, with specialized hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
The admission price to the rink is based on height. Those 58-inches (or 4 feet, 10 inches) tall or under can enter for free, while those above that height are charged $10.
Skate rentals cost $15 for adults and $10 for children. Lockers are also available on-site for $7. Guests can bring their own skates to use and can get them sharpened for $12.
MGM Springfield
This outdoor skating rink opened on Nov. 29 and will run until Jan. 19, 2025. It is open from 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 1 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. The rink is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
The rink will also feature special holiday hours from 4 to 10 p.m. Dec. 23 to 25, Dec. 30 to 31 and New Year’s Day.
Admission to the rink is $16 for adults, $12 for children age 12 and under, and $12 for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with a valid ID. MGM Springfield said skaters should be at least 5 years old and 3-and-a-half feet tall to participate.
Tickets are available in person only and can only be bought with a debit or credit card. Skate rentals cost $7 per person.
New England Botanic Garden
This new skating rink at the New England Botanic Garden in Boylston is accompanied by the garden’s annual “Night Lights” holiday lights display.
The rink opened on Nov. 15 and will stay open until Feb. 23, 2025. It features a concession stand and spectator deck as well as skate rentals priced at either $5 or $6 per pair, depending on the time of day.
To access the rink, skaters must also have tickets for Night Lights or general admission to the garden. Skaters are served on a first-come, first-served basis.
Access to the rink also costs $5 per person age 3 and older for daytime skating, and $6 per person for Night Lights skating.
Daytime skating runs from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Night Lights skating runs from 4 to 9:30 p.m. until Jan. 5, 2025. Night Lights skating will not be available Dec. 24 and 25 and on Jan. 1.

Quincy Outdoor Ice Skating Rink
This public skating rink is located in downtown Quincy across from the Quincy District Courthouse on Dennis Ryan Parkway and adjacent to the Kilroy Square Parking Garage.
The rink opened on Dec. 2 and operates daily from noon to 8 p.m. It offers free skating and free skate rentals. It can accommodate 60 participants per 50-minute skate session. The rink is also closed for two half-hour periods during the day for cleaning.
Quincy Recreation recommends skaters reserve sessions in advance for those who wish to skate at any time on Saturday or Sunday and for sessions from 5 p.m. onward on weekdays.
Children age 13 or under must be accompanied by an adult to skate, and the city encourages participants to bring their own skates if possible and to wear a helmet for safety.
The rink will stay open until the end of February school vacation week, the city said. It has a dimension of 106 feet by 56 feet — larger than last year’s, the city added.
Winter Skate at Patriot Place
This outdoor skating rink opened on Nov. 14, and is open Monday through Thursday 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday and school holidays 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Patriot Place noted hours may vary due to inclement weather, holidays, pre-scheduled private events, and events at Gillette Stadium.
Located next to Gillette Stadium at the Patriot Place shopping center in Foxborough, the rink can be found at its new spot at Lot 12B in the plaza’s South Marketplace.
Admission costs $10 for Patriot Place Advantage App member adults, and $12 for non-member adults. It costs $7 for children, seniors and active duty military for membership, and $8 for these groups without membership. Skate rentals cost $3 for members, and $6 for non-members.
The rink only accepts certain credit cards and gift cards as payment, as cash and personal check will not be accepted.

Skate @ Canal District Kendall
This outdoor skating rink is location off 3rd Street in Cambridge. One-day admission for adults is $6, for students and seniors it’s $4, and for children age 13 and under it’s $1.
Admission to the rink does not include skate rentals and vice versa. Skate rentals cost $10 for adults and $6 for children age 13 and under.
There are also lockers available to rent for $2 and skate sharpening for $10 for those who bring their own skates with them.
Season passes are also available for repeated visits to the rink this winter.
The rink is open Monday and Tuesday from 12-5 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
After opening, the rink will stay open through mid-March, so long as weather permits.
Worcester Common Oval
This 12,000-square-foot skating rink in the heart of Massachusetts’ second largest city is an annual tradition featuring piped-in music, concessions, holiday lights and more.
Opened Friday, Dec. 6 for the season, the rink operates from 5 to 9 p.m. on Fridays, 1 to 9 p.m. on Saturdays, and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Hours may vary due to holidays and school vacation days.
Over the course of its 2024-2025 run, the rink will host several special event days such as a Dec. 22 “Skate with Santa Claus,” a Dec. 29 “Worcester Railers Takeover,” a Feb. 9 “Super Bowl Sunday Skate,” and a Feb. 14 “Valentine’s Day Skate.”
Admission is $6 per person, and skate rentals are available, also priced at $6.
Amelia Park Arena
This indoor ice rink opened for its 2024-2025 season on Sept. 3 and is located in Westfield.
The arena offers $5 skate rentals per pair, and 1-hour and 2-hour public skating are available for $9 and $12 respectively for adults, $7 and $9 respectively for children, and $6 for seniors and members of the military for both options.
Skaters can expect to hear music while they skate and the arena said its facilities are fun for families, dates, large groups and special events.

The Rink at MarketStreet
This rink is opened on Nov. 16 and will run until Feb. 23, 2025 at the MarketStreet shopping center in Lynnfield.
Time slots are available to book in advance online. The rink is open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The rink will not be open on Christmas Day, and will have some varied extended hours in late December and for February school break week.
Admission to skate is $12, with a $6 skate rental fee with tax added. Children under the age of 3 can skate for free. Skating assists are available to rent for $10 for inexperienced skaters.
The rink will be open unless there is inclement weather such as heavy rain or snow, and closures will be announced through MarketStreet’s Instagram account.

Kirrane Ice Skating Rink
This public rink in Brookline’s Larz Anderson Park at 23 Newton St. hosts ice skating for its 2024-2025 season from Dec. 9 onward. The rink bears the name of Jack Kirrane, a U.S. men’s winter Olympic athlete and lifelong Brookline resident who won a gold medal for ice hockey in 1960.
Public skate hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Friday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
For adults, the admission fee is $7 for Brookline residents and $9 for non-residents. Skate rentals are available for $7 and skate sharpening for $10 for residents and non-residents alike.
A reduced skating rate is available for people with disabilities, veterans, seniors and students, which costs $5 for residents and $7 for non-residents. Children 2 years old or younger can skate for free.
The rink also offers drop-in hockey hours for those age 18 or older on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday and costs $10 per person.
